Can funny make President? Bill Clinton’s Final Days bit at the 2000 Correspondents dinner was hilarious. McCain was incredibly funny on SNL and on his multiple appearances on the Daily Show. One made president, the other is still trying. John Kerry managed to trump Stephen Colbert at his own trade but he is also credited with political faux pas that involve botching up carefully crafted jokes. He not only didn't make president but also lost to a person whose sense of humor results from bad phonetics and even worse grammar (talking of Bushisms, there is a new one on the market – “childrens”).



Looking presidential (reason why Mitt Romney is still a candidate), sounding presidential (the disproportional coverage given to Hillary’s shrill voice), being articulate (Dubya notwithstanding) are undoubtedly important to being president.



But laughing at Kucinich’s many witty one-liners on stage at the New Hampshire debates just now, I am wondering if funny can work for him. He’s left of left of left, five foot seven inches tall, with an annoying voice; funny is all he has. You never know, America loves to laugh. And he did promise to bring back the troops by April of ’07!
